Standard shelf life is 12 months from production date when stored at 15–25 °C and ≤60 % relative humidity in original sealed packaging. Cold storage at 5–10 °C extends shelf life to 18–24 months. Deoiled lecithin powder absorbs moisture rapidly – reseal immediately after use. Avoid storage near strong odours (lecithin absorbs scents). Signs of quality deterioration: caking (moisture uptake), darkening of colour, rancid smell (peroxide value increase).

Non-GMO: Yes. Helianthus annuus is not commercially grown as a GMO crop (unlike soy, where ~90 % of global production is GMO). An Identity-Preserved (IP) certificate with PCR test results is available from FDCM on request for formal non-GMO labelling. Solvent-free: depends on the specific production batch. Mechanical pressing and water degumming enable hexane-free processing. Request residual solvent analysis data from FDCM's CoA to confirm for any given batch.

Under EU Reg. 1169/2011: declared as 'emulsifier (lecithins)' or 'emulsifier (E322)'. No allergen highlighting (bold/underline) is required – unlike soy lecithin, which requires soy to be highlighted. The marketing claim 'soy-free' is fully defensible when substantiated by documentation. 'Non-GMO' claim requires an IP certificate with PCR data. For cosmetics: INCI name 'Helianthus Annuus Seed Extract' applies. For supplements: 'sunflower lecithin' or 'phosphatidylcholine from sunflower' are both acceptable designations.

In plant-based milks (oat, almond, coconut), lecithin at 0.2–0.5 % stabilises the oil-in-water emulsion by reducing interfacial tension between oil droplets and the aqueous phase, preventing creaming during shelf life. Phospholipids are thermally stable to 135–140 °C, making them compatible with UHT and hot-fill processing. Sunflower lecithin is preferred over soy lecithin in plant-based products to avoid introducing soy protein from a second source, enabling consistent allergen declarations.

Sunflower lecithin (INCI: Helianthus Annuus Seed Extract) functions as a natural emulsifier, skin conditioner and liposome-forming agent in cosmetics. EU Cosmetics Reg. 1223/2009 imposes no concentration limit. Key applications: moisturising creams (2–5 %), hair shampoos (0.5–1 %), body lotions (1–3 %), lip care (1–2 %), sun care (0.5–2 %). Phosphatidylcholine enables liposome formation for transdermal active delivery. Advantage over soy lecithin: no soy protein contamination, lighter colour, lower sensitisation risk.

Lecithin has a mild antioxidant effect: tocopherols (vitamin E) naturally present in the crude extract inhibit oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. However, deoiled lecithin powder undergoes acetone extraction which removes most tocopherols along with neutral oil. In practice: the antioxidant effect of deoiled lecithin powder is limited. Shelf life extension in bakery products is primarily achieved through starch retrogradation inhibition (staling delay), not antioxidation. For oxidation-sensitive formulations, adding tocopherols or ascorbyl palmitate alongside lecithin is recommended. The lecithin powder itself (peroxide value ≤10 mEq/kg at delivery) should be protected from oxygen exposure during storage.
